Recent studies show that over 31% of emails include attachments;
in most cases, vital information is contained in the attachments, not in the
text of the email. Opening attachments causes vital (and often confidential)
corporate information to be left behind for others to read and even to
distribute. The only time this is not a problem is when users are unable to open
attachments because the originating applications are not available; however,
users are then unable to review and effectively respond to their email.
 |
Security: When an attachment is opened, the supporting
application opens and “downloads” the file to the local machine, where it is
stored in the browser’s file cache. This cache is easily accessed by
unauthorized users--even after OWA users have terminated their OWA sessions.
Cached attachments can therefore be dragged to the desktop, opened, modified,
and distributed.
Productivity: OWA users are frequently unable to open attachments
because the originating application is not available on the machine. And if
users cannot view or print attachments, they are unable to conduct business
quickly and efficiently.
